Text alignment to the width of WordPress

In the new versions of WordPress the developers for some reason removed the button ‘align to width’ or in the html markup attribute align=justify. When typing the text of the post is strikingly sloppy formatting if the entire test is pressed to one edge. This style sometimes looks stylish, but in most cases a person is used to reading text aligned to the width of the page. So how to do it in WordPress?

[phpBB] Remove captions from images and attachments

The task was to remove captions for images in phpBB. They look like this: the name of the file, its size, how many times viewed. The easiest way to do this is to edit the template.

  1. Go to styles/prosilver/template/attachment.html ; instead of prosilver, it might be your template folder. It consists of four blocks: output thumbnail, picture, file, insertion flash. In my case we will edit the block .S_IMAGE
  2. Just delete a line from there:

<dd>{_file.DOWNLOAD_NAME} ({_file.FILESIZE} {_file.SIZE_LANG}) {_file.L_DOWNLOAD_COUNT}</dd>

Enjoy the beautiful display of pictures!

Reducing the CPU consumption of hosting. How to speed up any CMS site

Today, almost every site is not running on ancient HTML, but on the complex CMS, written in PHP. Most often it can be Joomla, WordPress, Drupal and so on. Since such CMS are quite “heavy” (and, frankly speaking, not very efficient because of the large number of ‘extra’ components) systems – sooner or later any site administrator is faced with the problem of lack of resources in hosting.

Many webmasters in this panic (myself experienced it more than once), trying to get wise to components, debug the cache, and so on. All this is fine, of course, but there is a much simpler way.

Just upgrade to the latest version of PHP. This is usually done with a couple of clicks in the web-hosting control panel.

The difference in performance and speed of the site on any CMS before and after – will be different at times. The only thing is to check compatibility of your CMS and its modules, components, etc. with PHP 7.x before the upgrade; and don’t forget to make a backup.

In general, the transition to a new version of software – a great way to save on hosting. Someone can move to a VDS on a cheap virtual machine thanks to this 😉

WordPress Voice Input

Hi all, I’m Stucco. I decided to try voice text entry via Google Docs. This article will be about voice input and texting options for your social networks or blogs. I hope I don’t have to do a lot of editing on this text. In order for your voice to be well recognized it is advisable to speak clearly. So where do you get this tool? Type “Google Docs” into a Google search, or “Google Docs” in Russian. This service is available online, you do not need to download special programs or install applications. It’s a free service from Google.

Upload images from phone to wordpress site

If you write articles on the site from a mobile device, it’s convenient to use the WordPress app. This app has a slightly reduced functionality, you can’t customize your site or make a design through it. But it will be quite handy to write a post with pictures and videos. I noticed an interesting feature when uploading photos from your phone to the site through the application of WordPress, there are two possibilities:

Best gallery for WordPress

If you also wonder why most of the galleries for WordPress are so ugly, inconvenient and expensive, and you want to find the best free gallery for posting your photos, videos or portfolio in a minimalistic and convenient format with the ability to align photos by width or height (justify gallery), flipping images, do not have silly restrictions on the number of galleries and photos… then you have come to the right place. As an artist, I’ve been thinking about making my own website with my artwork for a long time. I’ve been making sites on wordpress for quite some time now, but I had no idea that finding the right gallery would be so difficult.

[solution] WordPress: css template editing problem

Funny thing – when you edit wordpress templates ccs (and other CMS) in Google Chrome – often the cache glitches, and as a result, when you refresh the page changes are not visible. I did not understand what’s wrong until I refreshed the page cache (Ctrl+F5).

In other browsers (fox, for instance) it’s OK; knows when to refresh what. By the way, chrome glitches permanently in terms of caching – it can be seen in YouTube, where the bar “… begins live broadcasting” is often lit on old videos, although there is no broadcast. I wrote to google support about a year ago – they know about the problem, but so far they are not scratching.

WordPress on IIS does not load/display images

The first bump I got from encountering the WordPress rake on IIS: a problem with displaying pictures. When you upload an image to the ‘media’ of WordPress, it doesn’t display and gives an error:

HTTP Error 500.50 – URL Rewrite Module Error

After searching here and there it became clear that it is a problem with the rights to the folders. The permissions in IIS are very … how shall I put it softly – unusually in comparison with crystal clear system CHMOD *nux servers.

IIS permissions are set via folder properties -> “security”. Everyone who sits on the windows used to watch this tab, to change something in it in the daily “local” work there is rarely a need. And so – it occurred to me that this system is actually the Windows analogue of CHMOD, and for the web server is extremely important to configure it correctly.

Top 3 wordpress plugins

Let me tell you about my favorite top 3 plugins for WordPress that I dug up this year.

Broken Link Checker – allows you to find and fix broken links; no limit, the plugin is free. It searches for links gradually, without overloading the hosting. The only thing – after it checks – you need to remove it, otherwise it will periodically check again on the machine.

Better Search Replace – the best find recently; allows you to automatically replace the craps on the entire database. You can, of course, do it with SQL-request, but plugin change it much faster 🙂 Great job in conjunction with the Broken Link Checker

Polylang – has never been so easy and convenient to make multi-language interface. The best plugin to make the English version of the site.

Tell us about your favorite plugins in comments 😀

Pre-moderation on phpBB

A quick guide on how to enable pre-moderation on the phpBB forum. It’s on by default, but usually everyone turns it off and forgets how to turn it back on when you need it (when spammers attack, for example). So:

  1. General → User registration → there…
      • Message limit for new users: set 3 (default), although it can be smaller.
      • Set “New Users” as the default group: → YES
  2. Permissions → Forum Permissions groups → select New Users → check All Forums → on the screen that appears for each forum select the role With Prior Approval (no need to click the buttons to the right! role is selected from the drop-down list). Set the role for all forums and voila!

Don’t forget to test it on a new account 🙂

[solution] blurry emoticons in phpBB (or other forums)

First off, here’s how to add emoticons to phpBB:

  1. uploading smiley pictures to /images/smilies
  2. on the forum: Administrators section → “Messages” → “Emoticons” → below “Add some emoticons”
  3. Fill in the fields, tick the box at the top right and that’s it

Now… Often, when you create a new smileys – we take a big picture and reduce its size. In the process of reducing the size of the picture – it gets blurred. There are different algorithms of downscaling, you can change in the settings of Photoshop, but in any case, the result will be lousy. You’ll either have to render it by hand or apply an Unsharp mask, which will ruin the image.

The easiest way out is downscaling with your browser:

  1. Downscaling (reducing) the picture to twice the size of what the smiley face should be. Example: a smiley is 15×17 pixels. Then we make the original image 30×34.
  2. Click on the “big” smilies.
  3. In options add smilies put them the size we want (in the example above – 15×17).

Thus, our smileys will weigh a little more, but they will be nice and qualitative. Basically, you can use this method in normal web 😉 I will be glad to get your comments!

[phpbb] Page blocked due to error 403 (access denied)

I’ve noticed this bug with one forum – it was not indexed in Google Search… it says, the bastard:

Page blocked due to error 403 (access denied)

And well, that noticed, because long ago was sagging attendance and I did not understand what it may be associated. It turned out that in Yandex the forum is perfectly indexed, but in Google it is practically not.

I started digging, checked everything – robots.txt, .htaccess, DNS settings – I think the mabe somewhere I google bots rejected.

It turned out, the mystery was easy to open – from some goddamn place in my forum rights group “Bots” were not set. Well, there at all, the rights were reset to null. And google bots in this group by default, while the wise Yash scrolls all ononymously and so this bug was not.

Anyway, set the group to “Bots” – and hallelujah, everything started to be indexed. Then went to check his other forums. On the other was okay … well, how okay – was the standard access “Read Only”. Also moved it to the “bots”.

So, another bug in phpbb’s piggy bank – resetting permissions of the “bots” group from some unknown boon.

May Chmod be with you forever and ever, admin.

How PHP Works

If we want to look at HTML:
1. The user requests a page with ‘clean’ html
2. The server checks if the page exists
3. if there is – returns the .html page to the user as it was on the server.

If we access the page with PHP code:
1. The user requests the page e.g. index.php
2. The server sends the file to a handler that will execute the php code
3. The PHP handler sends the resulting code to the server
4. The server returns the requested page to the user as html

The phpinfo function

phpinfo is a PHP service function that outputs information about the version, configuration and extensions of PHP; about the Apache server and its settings.

To call this function, use the construct:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

How do I locate the php.ini file?

In phpinfo is very convenient because you can look up directives, extensions and other settings alphabetically there. Very often, it is necessary to find the location of the configuration file php.ini; because often there may be several configuration files on the server, but only one is always used.
With phpinfo, it is easy to see which config file is active, see Loaded Configuration File

Hint:
Note the two columns in phpini: Local Value and Master Value. The first column contains local directives that are set in .htaccess; the second column contains global, server configuration settings.

WordPress xml-rpc: protection against bruteforce

Since WordPress 3.5, any installation has xml-rpc enabled by default, which is a very useful thing that allows you to use mobile apps to maintain your site, among other things.

However, the use of xml-rpc is a huge black hole, attracting rogues of all stripes, which massively start bruteforcing your cozy site; I felt it on my skin, when the load on the hosting has increased by half.  So I disabled xml-rpc a long time ago and lived happily ever after.

But still the moment of truth came and after I bought a new Android phone, the Thing immediately started to master mobile WordPress. I had to turn this xml-rpc on; immediately the attacks began. In the end, the easiest solution was to create a white list of IP addresses to access the file xmlrpc.php

How to do this:
